King’s Day Flea Market Amsterdam: Vrijmarkt Guide for Visitors

King's Day flea market vrijmarkt Amsterdam with vintage goods

The King’s Day flea market — known as the vrijmarkt — is the soul of King’s Day. On April 27th, the entire city of Amsterdam becomes one enormous flea market. The name literally means “free market” — and that’s exactly what it is. No permits, no fees, no rules (well, almost). Anyone can lay out a blanket on the street and sell whatever they want. Vintage clothes, old records, homemade cakes, children’s toys, bizarre collectibles — the vrijmarkt has it all.

How Does the Vrijmarkt Work?

The King’s Day flea market runs on one simple rule: there are no rules. On King’s Day, normal commerce rules are suspended. Dutch law allows anyone to sell goods on the street without a permit or paying tax. People claim their spot by arriving early (some as early as 6 AM), laying out a blanket or setting up a small table, and displaying their wares. By 9 AM, entire streets have transformed into open-air markets.

Prices at the King’s Day flea market are negotiable. Haggling is expected — and half the fun. Most sellers only accept cash, so bring plenty of coins and small bills. The vrijmarkt typically runs from about 9 AM until 5 PM, though some areas start earlier and some party-zone sellers stay later.

Best King’s Day Flea Market Areas in Amsterdam

Jordaan & Westerstraat
This is the classic King’s Day flea market experience in Amsterdam. The narrow streets of the Jordaan fill up with quality sellers — vintage clothing, vinyl records, antiques, handmade crafts. Westerstraat becomes a kilometre-long market street. The atmosphere here is more local than touristy, with neighbours catching up over coffee and kids performing music for pocket money. Our Haarlemmerstraat store is a five-minute walk from the Jordaan vrijmarkt.

9 Streets (De Negen Straatjes)
The 9 Streets area is known for its curated, boutique vibe year-round, and the King’s Day flea market here is no different. The vrijmarkt here tends to be more stylish — better vintage finds, designer secondhand, and artisanal goods. It’s also where you’ll find our Berenstraat store, right in the middle of the action.

Vondelpark
The family-friendly vrijmarkt. Vondelpark on King’s Day is almost exclusively kids selling their old toys, performing little shows, running lemonade stands, and playing music. It’s heartwarming and a nice break from the intensity of the city centre. Bring your own kids, or just enjoy the wholesome chaos.

Albert Cuyp & De Pijp
The Albert Cuyp market area, which already hosts Amsterdam’s largest daily market, goes into overdrive on King’s Day. The surrounding De Pijp neighbourhood is popular with young locals and expats. Expect a mix of market stalls, street food, and impromptu DJ sets.

Noordermarkt & Lindengracht
A local favourite for the King’s Day flea market. Less crowded than the city centre, this area attracts real bargain hunters and sellers with genuinely interesting stuff. The Noordermarkt square fills up fast, so arrive before 9 AM for the best picks.

Vrijmarkt Tips for First-Timers

  • Bring cash. Seriously. Almost nobody at the vrijmarkt takes cards. Hit the ATM the night before — queues on the day itself are brutal.
  • Go early for the best stuff. Serious buyers show up by 8 AM. By noon, the best finds are gone.
  • Haggle respectfully. Offering half the asking price is fair game. A smile goes a long way.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking on cobblestones for hours. Crowds make it slow going.
  • Wear sunglasses. You’re outdoors all day. The April sun is surprisingly bright, especially reflected off the canals. Grab a pair with proper UV protection at Shady Shack before diving into the market.
  • Bring a bag. A tote bag or backpack for your finds. You’ll buy more than you planned.
  • Stay hydrated and eat the street food. Oranjetompouce (orange-glazed pastry) is the traditional King’s Day treat.
